The British MPs Expenses scandal has exposed the House of Commons to ridicule and accusations of fraud and misappropriation of money.

Claiming for cleaning moats, fixing tennis courts, claiming for mortgages that don’t exist, dog food and trouser presses has exposed the MP’s as using their expenses as a silent pay raise, out of sight of the British public.

Throughout this, MPs keep insisting that they have “acted within the rules”, but quite clearly, they have not.

We, as private citizens could not get away with claiming for social service benefits in a fraudulent manner. Then form a committee with other fraudsters to debate what new rules should be made to prevent ourselves from breaking the law again. We certainly could not appear on BBC News, stating that “They work extremely hard and simply made a mistake”.

The rules for allowances says that expenses claimed must be “wholly, exclusively and necessarily incurred for the purposes of performing your parliamentary duties”.
